Products include items you sell, stock, or manage in your inventory. Mews POS classifies products into three categories,
• Sellable
• Inventory tracked
• Purchasable
You can assign multiple classifications to a product in Mews POS, and you can link products with each other. You can combine these product classifications to set up seamless automations for managing your inventory.
In this article you can learn about:
• Sellable products
• Inventory tracked products
• Purchasable products
• Examples of classifications, connections and combinations
Sellable products
Sellable products are items in your inventory that are available for guest purchase. This includes products like food, drinks, and snacks. These products appear on the order & pay system and the Mews POS Android app once you designate them as sellable.
The Mews POS app lists each product with details such as price, applicable taxes, and descriptions for order & pay. You can modify certain features, such as size options to cater to guest preferences.
You can link sellable items to inventory tracked components to form a composite product. This is useful for menu items that require recipes or beverages measured per serving.

Inventory tracked products
Inventory tracked products are items in your inventory whose stock quantity you monitor. These are not typically sold directly to guests but are stored or purchased. This includes recipe ingredients or items you want to track in inventory without selling them directly.
These products can be purchased by you directly into your inventory, or have other purchasable products contributing to their overall stock. Your stock levels automatically update when you receive deliveries of connected purchasable products and assign them to a warehouse.

Purchasable products
Purchasable products are items you buy for your restaurant's stock, including recipe ingredients or items intended for direct sale. Unlike inventory tracked products, they are specific, with details like brand, price, unit, and quantity. You order these from suppliers without a profit margin.
You can connect purchasable products to inventory tracked items to contribute to their stock.
You can also sell purchasable products directly to guests. This is useful for items sold to guests in the same way you order them into stock, for example, bottled wine.

Product configuration examples
Example 1: A sellable recipe based menu item
When you configure a recipe product, you need to configure each product in that recipe. For example, if you sell a hamburger that is composed of multiple ingredients.
To configure the sale of a hamburger with inventory tracking,
Create purchasable products for the bun, lettuce and beef patty. These products are specific products and include the brand, weight, unit measurements and price.Create inventory tracked products for the bun, lettuce and beef patty.
- Connect the inventory tracked products to their respective purchasable products.
- Create a sellable product for the hamburger.
- Enable the Composite product slider switch to configure the recipe for the hamburger, and connect the respective inventory tracked products.
When a guest purchases the sellable product, the system automatically adjusts your item stock. If you need to switch a recipe items brand, you can create a new purchasable product and connect it to the inventory tracked product.
Example 2: A specific brand of item sold differently to how is it stored
When you sell a specific product to a guest, the inventory tracked product and the purchasable product are the same, but tyou might sell it in a different format. For example, if you buy beer by the keg but sell it by the glass.
To configure the sale of a glass of beer with inventory tracking,
- Create a product for the keg of beer, and mark it as purchasable. This product is both inventory tracked and purchasable. Note: Configure automatic unit conversion if you buy the product in a different measurement unit than you sell it in .
- Create a sellable product for the glass of beer and connect the inventory tracked product to it.
When a guest purchases the product, the system automatically adjusts the inventory tracked product stock
Example 3: A simple item sold in the same way it is bought
When you sell a product in the same way you purchase it, the system classifies the product as all three categories. For example, if buy wine by the bottle and sell it by the bottle.
To configure the sale of this bottle with inventory tracking,
- Create a product for the bottle of wine.
- Mark the product as purchasable and configure the details.
- Mark the product as sellable and configure the details.
When you purchase or sell the product, the system automatically adjusts your item stock. Since you sell this product in the same measurement unit as you buy it, you do not need to configure it any further.
