How to create an automatic service charge in Mews POS

An automatic service charge in Mews POS can help you increase revenue, compensate staff fairly and reduce errors. Administrators can add a service charge automatically to the cart in Mews POS based on parameters they configure. For example, when there are more than 6 guests. They do this by configuring the service charge from the Mews POS web dashboard. If required, wait staff can easily remove the automatically added service charge from the cart when they review the order. You can also decide how much of the service charge goes to your staff and how much stays with the property.

How to create an automatic service charge in Mews POS

To create an automatic service charge in Mews POS:

  1. In the Mews POS web dashboard, go to the main menu   > Settings > Operations.
  2. In the Outlets tab, click an outlet from the list to select it.
  3. Click the Tips & Service Charge tab.
  4. Click to enable the Enable service charge slider switch to add a percentage or fixed amount to the bill. Fill in the following details:
    • Description: Enter the name that appears on the invoice. If you leave it blank, Mews POS uses Service charge.
    • Type: Click to select how the service charge is calculated, for example, percentage or fixed amount.
    • Amount: Enter the service charge amount.
    • Minimum covers: Enter the number of guests from which Mews POS adds the service charge automatically.
    • Percentage to the staff: Enter the percentage of the service charge that goes to your staff. The remainder stays with the property. If you leave it blank, the full service charge goes to staff. For example, with a 20% service charge and 60% to the staff, a USD 100 bill produces a USD 20 service charge, of which USD 12 goes to staff and USD 8 stays with the property.
  5. Click Save.

This creates the automatic service charge. The staff share of each service charge appears in the Tips report under the user who closes the invoice.
