Italian properties that use City Tax with age bands configured in Mews need the system to assign each guest to the correct age band. The system configures all age ranges automatically; no action is required. The way Mews assigns an age band depends on whether the guest profile includes a date of birth. How Mews assigns age bands when a date of birth is available

If a guest profile includes a date of birth, Mews calculates the guest's real age and assigns them to the correct age band based on your City Tax configuration. No assumptions are applied.

 

For example, X Municipality exempts children up to 14 years old. If a reservation for a family is made up of 2 adults and a 13-year-old, and you add the DoB of each guest, Mews automatically calculates the city tax only for the two adults. The age range for City taxes is based only on the configuration of the City Tax age ranges, in line with the regulatory guidelines.

 

How Mews assigns age bands when a date of birth is missing

In many booking flows, reservations include the number of adults and children but not individual dates of birth. In these cases, Mews applies the following age assumptions to assign each guest to an age band:

• Adults without a date of birth are assumed to be 30 years old.
• Children without a date of birth are assumed to be 17 years old.

 

Mews uses the adult-and-child split from the reservation to apply these assumptions. The 18-year threshold for the adult/child distinction follows the EU standard.

 

Note: The assumed ages are part of Mews logic and cannot be configured on a per-property basis. The system still calculates the City tax per guest and per band, even without entering dates of birth.

 

What happens when a date of birth is added to a profile later

As soon as a guest profile includes a date of birth, Mews stops applying the age assumption and uses the guest's real age instead. If you add or correct a date of birth, you can recalculate city tax based on the updated age by adjusting and re-triggering the calculation on the reservation.

 

 

Best practices for accurate city tax calculation

To ensure the most accurate city tax calculation, capture the date of birth for all guests whenever possible. This reduces the need for manual adjustments and ensures each guest is assigned to the correct age band based on their real age.

 

If a booking only includes the number of adults and children, Mews applies the age assumptions above. The behavior is consistent and documented, so your team knows what to expect.
