If you use Airbnb to accept reservations and your property is in a region where Airbnb automatically collects tourist or city tax on your behalf, you need to be aware of how this interacts with Mews. If you have a hard-coded city tax configured in Mews, guests booked through Airbnb may be charged city tax twice.
In this article, you can learn about:
How Airbnb collects tourist and city tax
In certain regions, Airbnb automatically collects tourist or city tax directly from guests on behalf of properties. Airbnb then remits this tax to the relevant local authority. Because this collection happens outside of Mews, it is separate from any taxes configured in your Mews account.
Note: Users won’t be able to use hard-coded city taxes when working with Airbnb in the following regions: Portugal, Italy.

Airbnb currently collects tourist or city tax on behalf of properties in these regions:
- France
- Italy (only in municipalities that permit Airbnb to collect)
- Netherlands

- Bermuda
- British Virgin Islands

How this affects your Mews setup
If your property is in one of the affected regions and you have a hard-coded city tax configured in Mews, reservations received through Airbnb may result in guests being charged city tax twice, once by Airbnb at the time of booking, and once by Mews when the reservation is processed.
Currently, Mews does not support disabling hard-coded city taxes based on the reservation source. This means there is no way to automatically exclude Airbnb reservations from a hard-coded city tax in Mews.
Note: This limitation applies in regions where Airbnb is authorised to collect city or tourist tax directly. If you are unsure whether Airbnb collects tax on your behalf, check the Airbnb Help Center for your region.
