How to prepare for VAT rate updates in Mews POS on 31 December 2025

To comply with upcoming VAT changes in Germany, Netherlands and Finland, Mews is updating Mews POS and Mews PMS integrations just before midnight on New Year’s Eve 2025. These updates ensure that your system reflects the correct VAT rates from 2026. You need to take actions provided in this article to ensure your Mews POS applies the new tax rates correctly.

To reflect the VAT changes that take effect from 1 January 2026, the Mews team is updating the following on 31 December 2025 at 23:55 local time:

  • VAT rates applied in Mews POS
  • PMS tax codes used in your Mews POS to Mews PMS mapping

 

These changes ensure that all new charges in 2026 use the correct VAT rate.

 

ⓘNote:
  • The new tax rates will apply automatically to new charges created after midnight. Existing posted items will remain unchanged.
  • You do not need to make any manual updates to your tax rates. Mews applies the changes automatically on 31 December 2025 at 23:55 local time. However, you must follow the action steps provided below to ensure a smooth transition to the new VAT rates..

What actions you need to take before the VAT change

To  help ensure that Mews POS applies the new VAT rates correctly from the start of the new year.

 

  1. Close all open orders before 23:50 local time on 31 December 2025.
    This prevents invoices from spanning two years with different tax rates.
  2. If your property is in Germany Note: You must do this before you make any sales in 2026:
    1. Go to the Mews POS web dashboard, 
    2. click Products,
    3. Click the food product you want to change and click Edit.
    4. Click the 7% VAT rate to assign it.
    5. Click Save.
    6. Repeat steps i-vi for all food products.
    7. Verify that drinks and other applicable items have the standard VAT rate of 19% before you make any sales in 2026. 
  1. Avoid using Mews POS between 23:50 and 00:15 local time.
    During this time, updates may still be in process.
  2. To ensure correct pricing and billing, recheck the VAT rates of your most important products before running the app in 2026.
  3. To prevent residual cached data from applying old tax rates, clear app data on all Android devices used for Mews POS before placing new orders in 2026.

  4. Clear data on Mews Payments card readers before processing transactions in 2026.
