An automation in Mews Operations does repetitive work for you, such as messaging guests before they arrive or creating tasks for your team. You build an automation from components. Each component is one step. You connect the steps in the order you want them to happen.
Components come in two types:
- Mews Automations components: Built and maintained by Mews. They work directly with the data in your Mews property, such as reservations, guests, messages, spaces, billing, and tasks.
- Third-party components: Built by other providers. They cover logic, AI, and apps such as Slack and Google Sheets. You pay these providers directly for your usage.
You can use both types in the same automation.
Note
- The components in this article do not cover every use case. Mews adds new components to the library regularly, so you can automate more of your workflows.
In this article, you can learn about:
- What an output is and why you use it

What an output is and why you use it
An output is the result of a step. It is also the connection point on the component where you attach the next step. For example, Get Eligible Arrivals finds tomorrow's arrivals, and its output is that list of guests. When you connect the output to Send Message, Send Message receives the list and sends a message to those guests. If you do not connect an output, the automation stops there.
Most components have one output, called out, which means the step worked. Some components have several outputs, so you can choose what happens in each case, such as cooldown, which means the step skipped its action because it already ran recently.
What starts an automation
Only a trigger starts an automation. A trigger is always the first component. You choose a trigger that starts the automation when something happens in Mews, when something happens in another app, or at a time you set.
Every other component runs when the step connected before it finishes and passes its output on. You do not set a separate start for each component.
Mews Automations components
Mews builds and maintains these components. They work directly with the data in your Mews property.
Mews triggers that start an automation
Triggers start your automation. Each one passes the details of what happened to the next step.
| Component | What it does | Use it when | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reservation Created | Starts the automation when someone creates a reservation in any channel. | You want to react to new bookings, such as sending a welcome message. | out. It passes the new reservation to the next step, so the next step knows which reservation to work with. |
| Reservation Checked In | Starts the automation when someone checks in a reservation. | You want to act at check-in, such as creating a task for housekeeping. | out. It passes the checked-in reservation to the next step. |
| Reservation Products Added | Starts the automation when someone adds products to a reservation. | You want to react to a purchase, such as thanking the guest or alerting your team. | out. It passes the reservation and its new products to the next step. |
| Guest Profile Created | Starts the automation when someone creates a new guest profile. | You want to welcome new guests or pass their details to another tool. | out. It passes the new guest profile to the next step. |
| Schedule | Starts the automation once, or on a recurring basis, at a time you choose. | You want work to happen at a set time, such as every morning at 8:00. Mews recommends the schedule trigger for most arrival based automations because its timing is predictable. | out. It starts the next step at the time you set. Add a Get component next, so the automation knows which reservations or guests to work with. |

You can filter by arrival date, loyalty program and tier, number of stays, revenue, recency, and rate. | You want to contact or reward a specific group of arriving guests, such as loyalty members arriving tomorrow. | out. It passes the matching reservations to the next step. |
| Add Reservation | Creates a new reservation for a guest. | You want the automation to book a stay, such as rebooking a guest. | out when the reservation is created. error when it cannot be created. Connect error to a step that alerts your team, so a failed booking does not go unnoticed. |
| Change Reservation | Updates the rate, requested room type, number of people, or check-in and check-out times of a reservation. | You want the automation to adjust a booking, such as moving a check-out time. | out. It passes the updated reservation to the next step, such as a message that confirms the change. |

Third-party components
Mews does not build these components. They come from the automation platform and from other providers. You can combine them with Mews components in the same automation.
Each third-party component also passes its result to the next step through an output. You connect it in the same way, and the same reasons apply. The output gives the next step its information and tells the automation what to run next.
Third-party logic components that control how an automation runs
Logic components shape how an automation runs.
| Component | What it does | Use it when | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Each | Repeats the steps after it for every guest or reservation in a list. | A step finds more than one guest or reservation and you want to treat each one, such as messaging every arriving guest. | It passes one guest or reservation at a time to the next step, until the list ends. |
| Condition | Checks a detail and sends the automation down a true path or a false path. | You want to treat guests differently, such as sending an offer only to guests who stay three nights or more. | A true output and a false output. Connect each one to the steps that suit that result. |
| Set Variable | Stores a value for a later step. | You want to reuse a value later in the automation. | It passes the stored value to the next step. |
| Wait | Pauses the automation before the next step. | You want a delay, such as waiting two hours after check-in before you send a message. | It continues to the next step when the pause ends. |
| Storage | Keeps values between runs. This is the only way to track information across runs. It also has triggers that start an automation when a value is added, updated, or removed. | The automation runs more than once and needs to remember what it did, such as a guest who already received a message. | It passes the stored value to the next step. |
| HTTP | Sends and receives web requests, so you can connect any system that does not have its own component. It includes triggers that start an automation when a request arrives. | You want to connect a system that is not in the component list. You usually need help from a technical person. | It passes the response from the other system to the next step. |
| Filters | Makes simple checks, including Contains, Equal, Not Equal, Greater Than, Less Than, Is Not Empty, Range, and Modulo. | You want only the items that pass a simple check to continue, such as guests with an email address. | It passes on only the items that pass the check. |
| Timers | Includes a scheduler that runs an automation at times you set, a scheduler trigger you set in the screen, a Timer that delays a step, and Wait. | You want an automation to run at a set time or pause between steps. | It continues to the next step when the set time arrives. |
| Controls | A group of components that control how steps run. The next table describes each one. | A simple Condition is not enough to control your automation. You usually need help from a technical person for Code Block. | Each control passes its result to the next step, so the automation knows what to do next. |
| XML | Converts between XML and JSON, reads values from XML, and checks that XML is valid. | You connect an older system with HTTP components that shares information in XML. | It passes the converted information to the next step. |
| RSS | Reads a feed, or starts an automation when a new item appears in a feed. | You want to react to new content, such as news from a local events site. | It passes the feed item to the next step. |
Controls components
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Join | Waits for several paths to finish, then continues. |
| Join Each | Waits for every item in an Each loop to finish, then continues. |
| Switch | Sends the automation down one of several paths, depending on a value. |
| Counter | Counts how many times the automation passes through it. |
| Digest | Collects items over time, then passes them on together. |
| On Start | Runs steps when the automation starts. |
| On Error | Runs steps when something in the automation fails. |
| Stop Flow | Ends the automation. |
| Code Block | Runs code that you write. |
Third-party AI components from OpenAI, Claude, and Gemini
You can add AI components from OpenAI, Claude, and Gemini. You supply your own API key and pay the provider for your usage. Each AI component passes its answer to the next step through its output.
| Component | What it does | Use it when | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI Agent | Answers a question and acts on it in the same step. It accepts other components as tools, including Mews components, so an agent can answer a question and act on a reservation. Available for OpenAI, Claude, and Gemini. | The right action depends on what a guest writes, such as a guest asking for a late check-out. | The result of the agent, passed to the next step. |
| Send Prompt | Sends a prompt to the AI and returns the response. Available for OpenAI, Claude, and Gemini. | You want the AI to write or summarize something, such as a friendly reply. | The response, passed to the next step. |
| Transform Text To JSON | Turns text into structured information that other steps can use. Available for OpenAI, Claude, and Gemini. | You have free text, such as an email, and a later step needs specific details from it. | The structured information, passed to the next step. |
| Describe Images | Describes the content of an image. Available for OpenAI only. | You want to understand a photo, such as one a guest sends. | The description, passed to the next step. |
| Create Transcription | Converts audio to text. Available for OpenAI only. | You want to use a voice message or recording as text. | The text, passed to the next step. |
Third-party app components such as Slack, Google Sheets, and HubSpot
You can add components from other apps to connect your automations to the tools your team already uses. For example, you can add a row to a Google Sheet when a guest checks in, or send a Slack message to your housekeeping team when a reservation is created.
Each app has its own components. They work in one of two ways:
-
Actions: Do something in the app, such as create a row, send a message, or update a deal. Add them anywhere in your automation after the trigger. The output passes the result to the next step.
-
Triggers: Start your automation when something happens in the app, such as a new form submission or a completed task. The output passes the details of what happened to the next step.
To use these components, sign in to the app with your own account. You pay the app provider directly for your usage. Some apps have no triggers, only actions.
