How to set up the Mews Connector app

The Mews Connector app runs locally and not in the cloud. It allows Mews Operations to connect with local devices, such as printers and key encoders, so that you can directly send commands from Mews to your devices.

Install the Mews Connector app onto the same computer as your local devices, for example, key cutters or printers. This computer needs to:

  • be a Windows PC, with Windows Vista or later version,
  • operate 24/7 and never shut down,
  • run on .NET framework 4.8.

Note:  After the initial set up of your Mews Connector:

  • you cannot change the Connector integration settings within the application itself, although
  • you can change these settings in DeviceHubs.

In this article you can learn about how to set up up your Mews Connector with the following steps:

Step 1: Set up your Mews Connector app token

  1. In Mews Operations, go to the main menu Screenshot_2.png > Marketplace.
  2. Select More categories.
  3. In the Facility management section, click Explore under the Mews Connector integration.
  4. Click Connect integration. On successful connection of the integration, click OK. Mews redirects you to the My subscriptions tab.
  5. In your list of active integrations, find the Mews Connector app and click Edit to go to the settings page.
  6. In the Connected devices field, add any printers, or key cutters that you currently have set up.
  7. Click Save.

Step 2: Download and install the Mews Connector app

Install the Mews Connector app onto the same computer as your local devices, for example, key cutters or printers. This computer needs to:

  • Be a Windows PC, with Windows Vista or later version,
  • Operate 24/7 and never shut down,
  • Run on .NET framework 4.8.

To download and install Mews Connector:

  1. In Marketplace > My subscriptions, find the Mews Connector app and click Edit to go to the settings page.
  2. Click the image.png Download icon in the upper right corner.
  3. Install Mews Connector on a computer that operates 24/7, choosing the user that is always logged in. Make sure to enable read+write permissions, and not only read permissions.
  4. Find your access token. In Marketplace > My Subscription, find the Mews Connector app and click Edit to go to the settings page.
  5. Click the image.png Access token icon in the upper right corner. Note: You need to enable the integration in Mews before pasting the token in the Mews Connector app and completing the remaining steps.
  6. When you first open the Mews Connector app, enter your access token.

Note: You can set up only one Mews Connector app per access token.

  1. If your key cutter software communicates with Mews using the FIAS protocol, complete the following fields in your FIAS settings:
  • Fias Server Port: Enter the port number of your door lock application, for example, for Kaba integrations, use 8265.
  • Client Mode: Enable this if you're using a Kaba key cutter integration.
  • Enabled: Select this since you're using FIAS.

Note: If your key cutter does not use FIAS, you can skip this step.

To find out if your key cutter uses FIAS: Your key cutter software communicates with Mews using the FIAS protocol if:

  • during the setup of your key cutter integration in Mews Operations, you entered { "Type": "FiasProtocol" } into the Data JSON field; or
  • during the setup of your key cutter integration in Mews Operations, you entered { "Type": "AmbianceClient" } into the Data JSON field (Dormakaba Ambiance uses a variant of FIAS)
You can find a list of currently supported FIAS key cutters here.

  1. Note: If your key cutter does not use FIAS, you can skip this step. Once you complete the initial configuration, Mews maintains your setup in the cloud. Your Mews Connector settings are available in Mews Operations. If you need to make any changes, go to Settings > Property > DeviceHubs.

Note: You need to specify whether Mews Connector should act as the Client end of the connection or the Server end. To do this:

  1. Under Features, select Fias server or Fias client.
  2. Click Save.

If your setup is correct, your local Mews Connector settings look like this:

If your settings view still looks as shown below after setting up your Mews Connector, your configuration isn't correct.

  • The app probably doesn't have the read+write permissions.
  • Reinstall the app and make sure to give it the read+write permissions.

Note:

  • Mews recommends installing the Mews Connector app on a local computer.
  • Mews does not support installation on a Virtual Machine or server and can not provide a setup guide or support for this use case.
    • If you want to use the Mews Connector app on a Virtual Machine or server, ask your internal IT team to set up and maintain the connection.
