Can I upload historical data into Mews Business Intelligence?
You can upload historical data only for supported features that include a dedicated upload process. You can learn more in the help article How to upload your budget, forecast, and historical data to Mews Business Intelligence Pro.
Historical data is not available as a general upload for all dashboards; it is only available in Business Intelligence Pro.
If you need to compare current performance with older data, check whether the dashboard already supports historical comparisons or whether the feature uses a dedicated history upload template.
Note: Do not upload historical data into another product to make it appear in Mews Business Intelligence Pro unless a specific feature requires that process.
Which dashboard or report should I use?
You choose a dashboard based on the type of data you want to analyze.
- Daily summary dashboard: Use for daily operations and high-level performance
- Revenue dashboard: Use for financial performance and revenue analysis
- Pickup dashboard: Use to analyze booking pace and future demand
- Occupancy dashboard: Use to review room availability and occupancy trends
- Payments dashboard, Bills and invoices dashboard, or Card payments dashboard: Use for financial transactions and reconciliation
For example, use the Revenue dashboard to review monthly revenue instead of combining multiple dashboards.
You can learn more in the help article Curated reports in Mews Business Intelligence.
Which metric should I use?
You select a metric based on the result you want to analyze.
- Use Total revenue to measure overall financial performance
- Use Room revenue to focus only on accommodation income
- Use Average daily rate to evaluate pricing performance
- Use Revenue per available room to measure revenue efficiency
Note: Some metrics include multiple revenue sources. Check the metric definition before comparing values across dashboards.
If you are unsure, review the metric definition in the relevant dashboard or in the help article on the Mews Business Intelligence data model.
Why does a metric not match what I expect?
Differences usually come from filters, time settings, status logic, or metric definitions.
Common causes include:
- Different date filters or time contexts
- Different reservation statuses
- Historical changes in source data
- A different metric definition between dashboards and standard reports
- A visualization-level filter that overrides the dashboard filter
For example, revenue may change after the reporting date because source data updates after the initial posting.
Note: Always check filters, time settings, reservation statuses, and the metric definition before comparing two figures.
Why do figures in Mews Business Intelligence differ from standard Mews reports?
Figures may differ because Mews Business Intelligence and standard reports do not always operate in the same manner.
Check the following:
- Which date context you use
- Which reservation statuses are included
- Whether the dashboard uses stay date, reservation created time, or consumption time
- Whether the metric includes the same revenue components as the standard report
For example, a revenue figure based on consumption time may not match a figure based on reservation creation time.
If you need the closest possible match, start by aligning filters, statuses, and time settings.
How do I choose the correct time filter?
You select the time filter based on the question you want to answer.
Common time contexts include:
- Reservation created time: Use to analyze booking pace
- Reservation stay date: Use to analyze occupancy and stays
- Consumption time: Use to analyze realized revenue or consumed nights
For example, use Reservation created time to understand when guests book and use Consumption time to understand when revenue is consumed.
Note: Changing the time setting changes how all related metrics are calculated.
You can learn more in the help article Using filters in Mews Business Intelligence.
Why do consumed nights or consumed revenue appear on the wrong date?
This usually happens when the visualization uses the wrong time dimension for the question you are asking.
Check whether you are using:
- Reservation created time instead of Business Day Item Consumed Time
- A stay-related metric with a creation-related date field
- A filter or grouping that does not match the metric logic
For example, a reservation created in February may appear in a February report if the visualization groups by reservation creation date instead of the date of stay or consumption date.
Why do check-ins and check-outs look the same for a month?
This can happen when the logic or date grouping you select aggregates arrivals and departures across the whole month.
Note: Check-ins and check-outs are two different metrics using different time filters, so you cannot add both to the same visualization.
To interpret the figures correctly, check:
- The selected date context
- Whether the metric counts events within the month instead of overnight balance
- Whether the visualization groups by month instead of day
If you need to analyze arrival and departure variance in more detail, use a finer time grouping, such as day.
Why can I not find a filter or dimension I need?
Some filters depend on the dashboard and the data model.
Common reasons include:
- The dashboard does not include that dimension
- The data model does not support that combination
For example, a day-of-week filter may not be available in a specific curated dashboard.
If a filter is not available, you can:
- Use a different dashboard
- Build a custom visualization
- Contact support if you believe the dashboard should support that filter
Why does my filter not change the data?
A filter may not affect the results if the visualization does not use that filter or if the data model does not connect the filter to the displayed data.
Check whether:
- The visualization allows dashboard filters
- A visualization-level filter overrides the dashboard filter
- The selected filter has a relationship to the metric or attribute in the data model
Note: A filter can appear in the dashboard without changing a specific visualization if the data model does not connect them.
Why does my visualization not show the data I expect?
This usually happens because of how the data is structured or filtered.
Common causes include:
- Missing or incorrect metrics
- Conflicting filters
- Incompatible attributes in the same visualization
- Hidden visualization-level filters
For example, a visualization can remain filtered to one space type even when the dashboard-level space type filter is set to All.
Note: Visualization-level filters are not always obvious at dashboard level, so clear naming is important.
Why do I experience issues building a visualization?
You may experience issues when building visualizations because of:
- Missing required data fields
- An invalid metric and attribute combination
- Permissions that limit editing
- An unsaved or misconfigured dashboard
To resolve this:
- Add at least one metric and one attribute if the visualization type requires both.
- Check that the metric and attributes work together.
- Save the dashboard after editing.
You can learn more in the help article How to create data visualizations in Mews Business Intelligence.
Why does my custom metric not appear or stop working?
A custom metric may not appear or may stop working if:
- The metric definition is invalid
- The metric does not support the selected visualization
- The metric was changed in a way that affects dashboards using it
If you edit a reusable metric, check whether the change affects other dashboards and visualizations.
You can see which other dashboards the metric features in when you hover over it.
What does a specific metric or attribute mean?
Each metric and attribute has a defined meaning in the data model.
Common examples include:
- Rooms: Number of available rooms.
- Person count: Number of guests linked to reservations.
If you are unsure, review the data model documentation or compare the metric across dashboards.
You can learn more in the help article The Mews Business Intelligence data model.
Can I exclude parent spaces or shared inventory from reporting?
This depends on the property setup and the available data model logic.
If your property uses parent and child spaces or shared inventory, standard room metrics may not match physical room counts.
Before building the report, define whether you want to analyze:
- Physical rooms only
- Sellable spaces
- Parent and child spaces together
Note: If the dashboard logic includes parent spaces and you need physical room reporting only, you may need a custom visualization or support guidance.
Why do I not see age categories or guest age filters?
Age-related reporting depends on the available data points in the data model.
If age categories are not available, you may not be able to build the exact view you want with a guest age filter. In that case, check whether another available attribute can approximate the result or whether the use case is currently unsupported.
Are length-of-stay ranges configurable by property?
Length-of-stay ranges are not always configurable at property level.
If the available ranges do not match your reporting needs, use a custom visualization if the data model supports the underlying values, or contact support to confirm the current product limitation.
Why can I not find a specific report from Mews Analytics?
Some reports from Mews Analytics do not exist in the same format in Mews Business Intelligence.
To find the closest equivalent:
- Look for a curated dashboard that covers the same business area
- Use filters and visualizations to recreate the view
- Check the dashboard help article for its available metrics and filters
You can learn more in the help article Comparing Mews Business Intelligence and Mews Analytics.
How do I combine multiple metrics in one view?
You combine metrics by adding them to a single visualization. Note: Combining multiple metrics can cause issues, as not all filters apply to the same metrics.
- Open a dashboard.
- Click Add visualization.
- Add multiple metrics.
- Add an attribute to group the data.
For example, combine Room revenue and Room nights to analyze performance by segment.
Why does an export schedule use the wrong property context?
This can happen in multi-property environments if the schedule does not use the expected active property context.
If you notice that a scheduled export runs for the wrong property:
- Confirm the active property context before creating the schedule.
- Review the dashboard and schedule settings.
- Contact support if the schedule still uses the wrong property.
How is occupancy calculated at a group level?
Group-level occupancy depends on the properties and inventory included in the selected group and period.
If some properties in the group go live later than others, this affects the group-level figures because:
- The group only includes data from the date each property starts reporting in Mews Business Intelligence
- Properties that were not live during earlier periods do not contribute inventory or occupancy data
- Comparisons across time may reflect changes in portfolio coverage, not only performance changes
For example, if several properties join the group in recent months, historical occupancy for the full group may appear lower or incomplete compared to current periods.
Note: When you review group-level occupancy, always confirm which properties are included in the selected period and whether all of them were live at that time.
Do KPI dashboard figures include or exclude value-added tax? Can city tax be excluded?
KPI dashboard revenue figures do not include taxes as revenue.
In Mews Business Intelligence:
- Taxes are not included in revenue metrics
- Taxes are available separately through the Taxes metric
- City tax is treated as tax, not as revenue
This means KPI revenue figures already exclude city tax and other taxes from revenue calculations.
Note: If you want to review tax values separately, use the Taxes metric instead of a revenue metric.
