How to handle tax rate changes for products in Mews POS

For legal compliance and accurate financial reporting, it is important to configure your tax rates correctly in Mews POS. Whenever there are tax rate changes, it is important that you apply them just after midnight or outside your working hours when you don’t have any open or active orders to avoid applying the previous tax rate.

To accommodate a new, upcoming tax rate change that applies only to specific products, such as a new VAT rate for alcoholic beverages, you need to perform certain actions prior to the date of the tax change and on the date of the tax change.

Prior to the date of the tax change

Close all bills, including products with a consumption date up to and including the date preceding the date of the tax change. For example, if the new tax rate takes effect from January 1st, close all bills with the current tax rate before 11:59 p.m. on December 31st.

On the date of the tax change

Note: Before changing the tax rate, you need to close all your shifts.

To change the tax rate for your affected products,

  1. Sign in the Mews POS web dashboard as an administrator.
  2. Go to Products > Select the product for which you need to update the tax rate.
  3. Click Edit.
  4. Under Sell taxes:
    • Click to slide the switch to the left to deactivate the previous tax rate.
    • Click to slide the switch to the right to activate the new tax rate.

  1. Click Save.
  2. Repeat steps 2 – 6 for all affected products.

To synchronize the new rate across all your devices, on your mobile devices using Mews POS:

  1. Go to your device settings > Apps > Mews POS > Storage.
  2. Tap Clear data to clear all local memory from your device.

This ensures the app uses the new tax rate on your products instead of the stored previous tax rate from your mobile device. Note: Cleaning the data also deletes your login data from the device. To enable quick access to all cashiers as an administrator, you can sign in all PIN users at once via the Mews POS application.
