How to increase revenue using product modifiers in Mews POS

Product modifiers in Mews POS add extra options to menu items that guests and staff can select when placing an order. You can use them to offer customizations or paid add-ons, such as extra toppings or premium upgrades. You set up and manage product modifiers in the Mews Point of Sale web dashboard. You can use them during menu setup or when you want to boost revenue without adding entirely new products.

In this article you can learn about the following steps.

Step 1: Create and price product modifiers

Step 2: Assign modifiers to suitable products

Step 3: Set smart pricing for modifiers

Step 4: Monitor performance and refine your setup

Step 1: Create and price product modifiers

To increase revenue, add modifiers that guests find valuable and are willing to pay for. For example, offer cheese, sauces, or upgraded drink sizes as add-ons.

To create a product modifier from the Mews POS web dashboard:

  1. Click Products > Modifiers > ADD. This opens a New modifier set side window.
  2. Name: Enter the title of the modifier, for example, temperature.
  3. Selection: Click the drop-down menu to select the modifier type:
    • Single: This option enables the guest or user to select one option from the list only. Note: Selecting this option prefills the minimum and maximum fields with 1.
    • Multiple: This option enables the guest or user to select one or multiple options from the list. Note: Selecting this option leaves the minimum and maximum fields blank.
    • SELECTION LIMITS Fill in the following fields:
      • Minimum: Enter the minimum number of options the guest can select.
      • Maximum: Enter the maximum number of options the guest can select.

  • OPTIONS: Fill in the following fields:
      • Name: Enter the name of the option.
      • Price: Enter the price of this option. Optionally, you can leave this field blank for no price. Note: Mews POS adds this amount to the base cost of the product.
  1. Optionally, click and drag  to change the order of appearance in the digital ordering menu and in the Mews POS Android app.
  2. Click SAVE

Step 2: Assign modifiers to suitable products

After you create a modifier, assign it to products that benefit from customization or upgrades.

For example, assign a "Toppings" modifier to burgers or a "Drink size" modifier to soft drinks.

Target products that:

  • Guests frequently customize
  • Have high sales volume
  • Support small add-ons that increase spend

Step 3: Set smart pricing for modifiers

Price each modifier to increase total spend while still offering good value to guests.

For example, set a modest fee for extra cheese or charge more for premium ingredients like avocado.

Step 4: Monitor performance and refine your setup

Track how often guests select modifiers to identify what works. Use these insights to:

  • Remove unused or confusing modifiers
  • Adjust prices for high-performing add-ons
  • Introduce seasonal or promotional extras
