How to manage taxes in Mews POS

Taxes in Mews POS is where you control how tax is calculated and applied across your products and categories. As an admin user, you use the Taxes section of Customer Settings to create and manage tax profiles, view the tax rates available in your legal environment, and configure advanced settings such as your EIN and surcharge tax profile. You do this when you first set up your account, when your tax requirements change, or when you want to adjust how specific products or categories are taxed, from the POS back office. This ensures your tax configuration stays accurate, consistent, and compliant with your legal environment.

Note: Taxes settings are only visible to users with the Admin role. Non-admin users cannot access this section.

In this article, you can learn about:

How to access Taxes settings

  1. Open the POS back office and go to Settings in the left navigation.

  2. Select Taxes.

The section has three tabs: Tax profiles, Tax rates, and Advanced settings.

Tax profiles tab

Tax profiles group one or more tax rates into a named set that can be assigned to product categories and individual products. Every account has a default tax profile used as a fallback when a product has no specific profile assigned.

View tax profiles

The Tax profiles tab shows a table of all existing profiles. Each row displays:

  • Profile name
  • Included taxes (tax rates in the profile)
  • Total rate
  • How many categories and products use this profile
  • Whether it is the default profile

Add a tax profile

  1. Click Add tax profile.
  2. Enter a Name for the profile, for example, "US Standard".
  3. Optionally enable Default profile to make this the fallback for products without a specific profile. If another default already exists, it will be replaced.
  4. Under Included rates, select one tax rate per taxation. You can leave a taxation set to None to exclude it.
  5. Click Save.

At least one tax rate must be included in the profile.

Edit a tax profile

Click the edit icon on a profile row, update the fields, and click Save.

Delete a tax profile

Click the delete icon on a profile row and confirm. Any products or categories using the deleted profile are automatically reassigned to the default tax profile. You cannot delete the default profile itself.

Tax rates tab

Tax rates are managed automatically based on your account's legal environment. The banner at the top of this tab shows which legal environment applies to your account.

The table displays all available tax rates with the following columns:
