Using connected spaces in availability blocks in Mews Operations

Connected spaces are spaces that share physical inventory, where one parent space contains one or more child spaces. For example, a two-bedroom apartment that you can sell as a whole, or as two individual rooms. When you sell one child space, the parent space is no longer fully available, and the reverse is also true.

 

Availability blocks include these parent and child relationships in their availability calculations. When you block or pick up a connected space, Mews adjusts the availability of its related spaces at the same time, so a group booking cannot oversell inventory that is already committed elsewhere. This keeps occupancy accurate for properties that use apartments, suites, or adjoining rooms in group business.

Note: This behaviour applies to space categories that have parent and child relationships configured. Blocks that use only standalone space categories are unaffected.

What connected spaces are

A connected space is a space whose availability depends on one or more other spaces. Mews models this as a parent space and its child spaces:

• Parent space: The larger space that contains the child spaces. For example, a full apartment.
• Child space: A space that forms part of the parent. For example, one bedroom within that apartment.

Selling, blocking, or picking up a child space reduces the availability of the parent, because the parent can no longer be sold as a complete unit. Committing the parent reduces the availability of every child space it contains.

 

How connected spaces affect availability in a block

When you add a connected space to an availability block, Mews includes its parent and child relationships in the block's availability calculation:

• Blocking a parent space removes its child spaces from public availability for the block period.
• Blocking a child space reduces the availability of its parent space for the block period.
• Picking up a reservation on a connected space applies the same logic, so the connected spaces stay accurate as the block converts.

This protects your group inventory from being oversold across connected spaces, without you tracking the overlap manually.

 

Note: If a pick-up conflicts with an existing connected space reservation, Mews shows a "Cannot overbook availability blocks" error.

What you see in the block

Mews reflects connected space availability automatically. You do not need to configure the relationship inside the block, because it comes from your space category setup.
