Analyzing data using filters in Mews Analytics

Mews Analytics dashboards use Power BI , I.e., Business Intelligence, filters to refine the data from across your property(s) and reorganize and display data that is relevant to you. In Mews Analytics, you have various options to filter your data, with some filters unique to certain Analytics types. You can learn more about using Mews Analytics, here.

You can analyze data using Power BI filters to:

  • Reorganize and visualize your data in Mews Analytics.
  • Go into more detail on aspects of your business, for example, to identify successful revenue streams, or trends in customer behavior.
  • Analyze specific rates or space types to check their performance against others.
  • View your property data from specific time periods to adjust rates, or to gain insights into occupancy and other aspects of your business.

In this article you can learn the following about analyzing data using filters in Mews Analytics:

Types of filters

You can view the main filters in the Filters pane on the right of the screen. Note: The filters can vary between the different types of Analytics, or tabs within a type.

You can choose from:

  • Filters on all pages: These apply to the entire Analytics dashboard you are on. For example, every page or tab within Manager analytics. Even when you change tabs within a section of Analytics, your filter selection still applies.
  • Filters on this page: These apply only to the specific page or tab of the Analytics dashboard you are on. For example, Manager analytics > Daily. They vary depending on which page or tab you are on and are relevant to specific reports.
  • Filters on this visual: These apply to a specific visual on the Analytics type and tab you are on. A visual is a specific section of the report, or a visual representation of your data, such as a graph or data table. Click on the visual, for example, a graph or chart, to make this section appear in the Filters panel.
  • Filter by enterprise: You can filter the data by one or more properties or enterprises. This filter option displays only the properties you have access to. By default, when you open any Mews Analytics dashboard, you see a chain-level overview. You can filter by property to look at data on an individual property basis. To view information on a specific property:
    • Click the Enterprise drop-down to select the property you want to focus on. You can:
      • Scroll down the list and click on your chosen property or enterprise,
      • Type in the search bar to quickly find results matching your search term,
      • Make multiple selections or Select all.
    • You can see the properties you select marked with a tick, as below. To apply the filter, click outside the drop-down menu:

  • Basic filtering: This basic filter lets you easily simplify your data. You can use this filter to search for information on a specific date, chain, space type or more, according to the filter type you select. For example, if you want to check the number of active reservations in your property(s) on a specific day, select a date such as 1/1/2020 and click Apply filter, to filter your results to show data for this specific date only.
  • Advanced filtering: Advanced filtering is best for complex searches. It has flexible filters you can combine or stack for extra precision, so you can specify an interval for each date filter. Filtering by Relative date and Relative time are also forms of Advanced filtering. For example, you can use this to view data from all your bookings between two specific dates.
    • Relative date: You can filter your data by relative date, by clicking any Date filter, and selecting this filter type in the dropdown. Select from the dropdowns and enter a specific date interval to determine how the filter works. You can also filter based off your current date. For example, you can filter to see data from all reservations during the last 3 months.
    • Relative time: You can filter your data by relative time, by clicking any Date filter, and selecting this filter type in the dropdown. Select from the dropdowns and enter a specific time interval to determine how the filter works. You can also filter based off your current time. For example, you can filter to see data from all reservations during the last 12 hours.

You can learn more about using filters to view data from a specific time period in Mews Analytics and see other examples here.

Additional filters

There are additional Power BI filters other than the main filters described above which you can apply to specific visuals in Mews Analytics. They are as below:

You can use these additional filters to:

  • Go into more detail directly on a visual, by breaking down each section into smaller parts, for example, you can change a yearly graph to display data per month.
  • Change the format of the visual, instead of only filtering it, for example, showing revenue metrics per space type, instead of per day.
  • Easily click on your point of interest, instead of selecting and applying filters in the Filters panel. This gives you quick and easy access to more detail. For example, click on a property's revenue stream to break it down to its individual components.

Tip: These filters are useful to gain specific insights on your business, for example, identify successful outlet items, busy time periods in your property(s), and more. You can use this data to adjust your rates or other aspects of your business accordingly, to maximize profits.

For example;

To view your outlet amount per day instead of year in the Outlet gross amount by year graph in Outlet analytics:
  • Click “Drill down” to break down the graph from “by year”, to “by month”, to “by day”.
  • Click “Drill up” to return to the original “by year” view.

You can learn more about drilling down and additional filters in Power BI here.

Using filters

You can use the Power BI filters in Mews Analytics to:

  • Analyze and reorganize datasets you select, by going into more detail or “drilling down” with Power BI. You can learn more about the drill-down feature of Power BI filters here. There is more information about Power BI filters in general here
  • Analyze or filter to show specific time periods, by bringing attention to, or excluding certain data from your visualizations.

You can use the Filters panel on the right to refine your results. Apply these filters to specific datasets to further refine your data. You can also use the additional Power BI filters on each visual, as below. They let you change the viewing format, break the visual down into more details or into smaller units, for example, months to days. This gives you different ways to view your data.

Important: The report highlights the active filters in grey, as you can see in the screenshot above. To view active filters in the additional Power BI filters, click the Inserting image...Filters on Visual icon, as below:

You can further refine your filters in the Filters panel on the right by selecting the Filter type. Click on the filter you want to apply, for example, Date, and it expands to include a dropdown, as below. You can choose from Basic filtering or Advanced filtering, and Relative date and Relative time, which are a form of advanced filtering:

Tip:

  • As a best practice, use the Relative date or Relative time filters to run your normal daily and weekly reports.
  • Selecting specific elements on any chart in Mews Analytics filters all other visuals and metrics on that tab that contain that element, for example, selecting a single rate from the Revenue per rate chart updates the revenue, RevPAR (revenue per available room), and any other metrics, according to the rate you select.

Set default filters

All dashboards in Mews Analytics allow you to save your current filter selection as default to the specific type or tab of Analytics you are working on, for example, Financial analytics, or Aging balance > Aging report. Use this setting to save time re-selecting filters if you frequently view the same statistics in one property in Mews Analytics.

You can learn how to set default filters in Mews Analytics here.

Focus mode and Spotlight option

You can select different ways to filter your view in Mews Analytics, using Power BI’s additional filters. You can use them to visualize or view your data in different ways. There are many datasets per page in Mews Analytics, but you can hide the data not relevant to you to reduce distraction. To concentrate on only one dataset, choose from the following viewing options:

  • Select Inserting image...Focus mode to expand the section you are on, making it full screen. You can still use the Filters sidebar, by hiding or collapsing it accordingly. Select Back to report to return to the original view.
Note: Remember that filters you apply in Focus mode, for example, Filters to all pages, still apply after you exit the mode.
  • Select Inserting image... More actions > Spotlight to spotlight the section you are on and fade out all others.

You can learn more about other actions you can take using Power BI here.
