Managing restriction settings for availability blocks in Mews Operations

You manage restriction settings for availability blocks when you want to decide whether availability block rates follow the same rules or restrictions you set for your other rates. You do this in Mews Operations, in your Property settings, to make sure your group pricing strategy works with your rate setup and revenue management system.

Managing restriction settings for availability blocks in Mews Operations

Understanding restriction settings for availability blocks

By default, restrictions set at the property level for spaces and rates apply to availability block rates. This includes restrictions like minimum length of stay, maximum length of stay, and closed to arrival.

However, if you use a revenue management system, this default behavior may lead to issues. For example, Duetto expects availability block rates to ignore property-level restrictions unless they intentionally apply to the block rate itself.

You can prevent these restrictions from applying by excluding availability blocks from global restrictions. When you do so :

  • Availability block rates only follow restrictions that you set directly on the block rate or the rate group used for the block
  • No property-level or global restrictions apply to current or future availability blocks
  • Reservation pickups from availability blocks are not blocked by unrelated global restrictions

For example, if you set a three-night minimum stay for all property rates, but you want to allow one-night stays for a corporate block, excluding availability blocks from global restrictions ensures your availability block rate accepts one-night stays.

Example: How closed to stay restrictions apply to availability blocks

Closed to stay restrictions block reservations that include specific nights. These are typically used to manage high-demand dates, such as holidays or events.

When you create a closed to stay restriction for all rates and all space categories at the property level:

  • The restriction appears on the reservation screen
  • It prevents users from creating standard reservations that include those nights

However, availability blocks behave differently:

  • If you exclude availability blocks from global restrictions, closed to stay restrictions do not apply
  • You can create availability blocks during restricted dates
  • You can pick up reservations from the availability block, even if the dates fall under closed to stay restrictions

For example, if you block February 10–16 for closed to stay and create an availability block for February 12–15, the system allows you to pick up reservations from the block, even though those dates are restricted globally

Note: If you do not exclude availability blocks from global restrictions, closed to stay restrictions apply to availability blocks at the time of reservation pickup.

How to modify restriction settings for availability blocks

Note:

  • You need Admin permissions in Mews Operations to manage this setting.
  • If you exclude availability blocks from global restrictions, availability blocks do not consider any global restrictions during reservation pickup.

To stop global restrictions from applying to availability blocks, follow the steps in the article How to modify restriction settings for availability blocks.
