Multicurrency by Mews Payments enables transparent currency conversion when guests pay for rooms and services via Payment Request, Booking Engine, Mews Terminals, Mews POS, and Mews Kiosk. Mews enables Multicurrency by default for eligible properties.
With Multicurrency, international guests can view the cost of the room or service in their preferred currency, and then pay using this currency with transparent fees. In addition, your business claims a portion of the transaction fee as revenue, creating an additional revenue stream.
Note
- Mews Terminal S1 and S2 support Multicurrency for payments taken in Mews Operations, Mews POS for in-person payments, and Mews Kiosk.
- Multicurrency does not apply to POS Digital Ordering payments.
- Multicurrency for Mews Terminals will be available in the United States and Canada later this year.
- Mews Payments is currently rolling out Multicurrency to all regions and it may not be available in your region at this time.

Overview
How does Multicurrency work?
When your guest pays for a room or service online or by using a Mews Terminal, Mews detects the currency the guest uses based on factors such as geolocation, guest preferences, or the currency of the payment card. Optionally, the guest can select a currency option.
Upon detection or selection, Mews displays transparent exchange rates and fees. The guest can opt to complete payment in their preferred currency with the displayed fees.
What is the benefit of Multicurrency?
Multicurrency completes the currency conversion before Mews processes the payment. This ensures that the transaction processes in the preferred currency and eliminates the need for currency conversion with the guest's bank or card issuer.
In addition, your property captures a percentage of the Multicurrency fee as revenue.
- Improves transparency, increases guest trust, and reduces disputes related to exchange rates by showing guests the final amount in their home currency before they pay.
- Creates an additional revenue stream, as your property earns a percentage of the Multicurrency markup fee when guests choose to pay in their own currency.
Where does Multicurrency apply?
Multicurrency by Mews Payments applies to eligible card payments processed through Mews Payments across the Mews ecosystem.
When you enable it, Multicurrency works for:
- Online payments: Guests can view and pay in their home currency before completing the transaction via the Booking Engine or Payment Requests.
- Front desk payments in Mews Operations: Guests can choose their preferred currency directly on the terminal, using Mews Terminal S1 or S2.
- In-person outlet payments in Mews POS: Guests can select their home currency when paying in restaurants, bars, or other outlets, using Mews Terminal S1 or S2.
- Mews Kiosk: Self-service payments.

Is Multicurrency available in Mews POS?
Mews POS supports Multicurrency for in-person payments when your property uses Mews Terminal S1 or S2 and Mews Payments.
When a guest uses an eligible card, they can choose to pay in:
- Their home currency, with a clearly displayed markup fee, or
- The property currency, with no Multicurrency fee.
Mews POS requires no additional configuration. Mews Operations manages Multicurrency settings and applies them across Mews Operations and Mews POS.
Multicurrency does not apply to POS Digital Ordering payments.
Activation and Eligibility
How can I activate or manage Multicurrency?
From April 2025, the standard Mews Payments contract for all new customers, in regions where the service is available, includes Multicurrency.
If your property is eligible, Mews automatically enables and pre-configures Multicurrency. You do not need to set up Multicurrency manually.
You can manage Multicurrency at any time:
- In Mews Operations, go to the main menu > Settings > Property > Payments > Multicurrency.
If Multicurrency appears disabled and you want to reactivate it, you can do so directly from the same configuration screen.
If you are unsure whether Multicurrency is available in your market or have questions about your setup, contact your Customer Success Manager or Mews Support.
I already have a currency conversion solution in place, does Multicurrency override it?
Multicurrency overrides any exchange rate for payments via Mews Payments. Mews implements Multicurrency as the default setup for currency conversion for Mews Payments. Mews cannot override or change exchange rates for payments made outside of Mews Payments, such as external payments.
Can I opt out of Multicurrency?
Yes, to opt out of Multicurrency:
- In Mews Operations, go to the main menu > Settings > Property > Payments > Multicurrency.
- Under Configuration, click the slider switch to disable multicurrency for online payments.
- Click the slider switch to disable multicurrency for terminal payments.
Can I use Multicurrency in Mews POS if I do not use Mews Payments?
Mews POS Multicurrency works exclusively for properties that use Mews Payments and Mews Terminals.
If you use Mews POS without Mews Payments, contact your Mews representative to learn how to activate Mews Payments and enable Multicurrency across your property.
Pricing and Fees
Who pays the markup fee?
Mews charges the full markup fee to the guest when they agree to the transaction.
Why do I have a multicurrency line on my invoice for Mews Payments?
When a guest chooses to pay in their home currency, Mews charges the guest the full markup fee at the time of payment, including all fees to use the services at the point of payment.
Mews then deducts your share of the markup from your Mews Payments invoice. This appears as an FX on payments line item on your invoice.
This ensures:
- The guest pays the full Multicurrency fee.
- Your property receives its share of the markup revenue.
- Reporting remains transparent and reconcilable.
With Multicurrency enabled, your property offers international guests a transparent payment experience in their home currency and earns additional revenue from each conversion.
