Using mixed-occupancy rows in availability blocks in Mews Operations

Availability blocks in Mews Operations support mixed-occupancy rows, which let you add the same space category more than once in a block. Each row represents a distinct occupancy level, for example, single occupancy and double occupancy for the same space category. This gives group booking managers more precise control over occupancy allocation and pick-up tracking within a block.

What mixed-occupancy rows are

When you add a space category to an availability block, you can add the same category more than once. Each row you add for that category represents a separate occupancy level, for example, a row for single occupancy and a row for double occupancy. Mews tracks allocation, pick-up, and revenue for each row independently.

 

If you add a space category only once, the block uses the existing single-row-per-category behaviour and nothing changes.

 

Configure mixed-occupancy rows in a block

To add mixed-occupancy rows to an availability block:

1. In Mews Operations, go to the main menu  > Reservations > Availability block report, then open the block you want to configure.

2. In the Space category section, select the space category you want to add.

3. To add a second occupancy row for the same category, select the category again and set a different occupancy level, for example, Double if you already added a Single row.

4. Set the number of spaces and any other block details for each row.

5. Click Save to apply the changes.

 

Note: You can add the same space category more than once, as long as each row has a different occupancy level.

 

How occupancy is calculated

The total occupancy for a space category in a block is the sum of all its occupancy rows. For example, if you add a Deluxe Room category twice, once with single occupancy set to 10 spaces and once with double occupancy set to 5 spaces, Mews shows a combined total of 15 spaces for that category in the block.

 

How pick-up works across occupancy rows

When you pick up a reservation from a block and its occupancy level changes, for example, from single to double, Mews automatically moves the pick-up count to the matching occupancy row. This keeps your pick-up numbers accurate across all occupancy levels in the block.

 

Note: The occupancy count of a picked-up reservation always counts against its matching occupancy row. If the matching row is unavailable, Mews uses a higher occupancy row first, then a lower occupancy row as a last resort. The same logic applies when the occupancy of a picked-up reservation changes. Mews never restricts you from picking up reservations based on the mixed-occupancy split — mixed-occupancy rows are used for revenue forecasting, not as operational constraints.
