Scanning an identity document in Mews Operations

You can use the Mews identity scanner to scan a customer's identity documents and add it to their customer profile at any time. This ensures you have up to date documentation for your guests and provides an added layer of security. The scanner is built into Mews Operations and works for any travel document with a Machine Readable Zone. Note: 

  • You can also use identity scanners from third-party integrations. Contact the provider of the ID scanner provider for setup instructions.
  • If your property computer does not have an integrated webcam, you can install an external webcam. There are no specific requirements, however,
    • The camera needs to have a high resolution and an autofocus option to ensure proper scanning.
    • You must activate the authorization for camera use in Google Chrome.

How to scan an identity document

  1. In Mews Operations,
    • Enter the guest’s name in the search bar and click their name, or
    • Click on any upcoming reservation from the Reservation overview or Timeline and click on a guest’s name.
  2. Click image.png, the Mews identity scanner.
  3. Hold the identity document in the square, making sure that the machine-readable zone is visible.
  4. Click Scan.
  5. Review the data and ensure it is accurate, then click Save.

This scans an identity document in Mews Operations and adds it to their customer profile.

The Mews identity scanner automatically disables the camera when you switch browser tabs and turns the camera on once you go to the scanner tab.


 

Requisites for the scanner

When scanning an identity document, for example a passport, make sure: 

  • The passport is legible and there is no reflection.
  • ‌You are scanning the correct side of the passport. This is the side with a machine-readable code as seen below.

  • If the names appear as characters after you scan the document, for example, “C” as a “ Permissions for this site.
If you use third party scanners, make sure to use a high-quality scanner. You can refer to the page for scanner specs here
 

Troubleshooting the scanner

If you click image.png and see the following screen, follow the steps below:

 

  1. In your browser, click View site information > Permissions for this site

 

  1. In the settings page, change the Camera permission to Allow

     

    You can now access the camera to scan identity documents. 

    Note: You need to change the permissions for "app.mews.com” to always allow your camera. The default setting in Mews is to ask for permission every time.
