Tap to Pay on Android for Mews POS turns any compatible Android device into a payment terminal. Staff use their existing devices to take contactless payments for orders using the device NFC capability, increasing staff efficiency and improving the guest experience.
You can use Tap to Pay on Android with Visa, Mastercard, and American Express contactless cards and NFC-based mobile wallets including Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay, to accept payments below the cardholder verification limit.
Note:
- The cardholder verification limit varies depending on the country. If a payment exceeds this limit, you can take it using a Mews Terminal. You can learn more about the cardholder verification limit here.
- If a Tap to Pay on Android payment requires a PIN, Mews POS cancels the transaction, and you need to take the payment using a Mews Terminal.

Pre-requisites for set up
To use Tap to Pay, ensure you have at least one Mews Terminal active. You need to install Mews POS on an Android device, such as a smartphone. The Android device must meet all the following criteria, otherwise there may be issues connecting:
- Contains functioning NFC antenna and chipset
- Is not rooted and device bootloader is locked and unchanged
- Runs a current version of Android (Android 11 or above)
- Uses Google Mobile Services and has the Google Play Store app installed
- Has a hardware backed keystore
- Supports generating key pairs using a variety of key algorithms, including RSA and AES from the Android keystore
- A stable connection to the internet
Step 1: Enable Tap to Pay on Android for your property
To set up Tap to Pay on Android:
- Install Mews POS on an Android device with NFC and location capabilities, such as a smartphone.
- Enable both NFC and location from within the device settings. Note: If you are unsure how to do this, refer to your mobile device documentation.
- Ensure you have at least one Mews Terminal active.
Now you can add your first device as a Tap to Pay terminal.
Step 2: Enable Tap to Pay on Android on a new device
To set up a device to use as a Tap to Pay terminal:
- Open the Mews POS app, then tap
>Settings.
- Tap Card Reader, then tap Find Card Reader.
This adds your Android device to the connected card readers list and configures your Android device to use Tap to Pay. Note: You can tap on the device name to delete a device or change the name.
