Sending SMS messages to US guests

Certain countries have specific rules surrounding direct to customer communications. The United States requires all businesses be registered in a system before they can begin sending messages to phone numbers based in the US.  This is done to ensure regulatory compliance around spam and privacy laws.

If you want to send messages to guests coming from the US, you need to get your business checked and verified in two steps. The first step is brand registration which approves your property and the second is campaign registrations which approves the SMS message.  Mews simplifies this into a one step process which only requires you fill out a form. You can keep track of your registration status in the Text messaging screen.

Note: You need to have Admin permissions to connect to an integration in the Mews Marketplace.

Understanding registration statuses

After you submit the registration, Mews starts your brand registration. This takes less than two days to complete. Once this is successful, Mews starts your campaign registration which can take up to three weeks to complete. Both need to be successfully approved in order to send SMS messages. You can view your registration status directly in the Text messaging screen. To do so, in Mews Operations go to the main menu  > Settings > Property > Guest experience > Text messaging. Read below for a detailed description of each status.

  • In review: Your brand registration is under review. This can take up to two days to complete.
  • ApprovedYour brand registration is approved.
  • SuspendedYour brand registration is suspended; Mews then contacts the registry’s support agents to see if a resolution is possible. Note: This can happen if your business has been penalized in the past for sending spam.
  • FailedYour brand registration failed due to an error in your form. Mews then investigates the error and automatically initiates campaign registration. Note: Mews might contact your property directly for clarification depending on the type of error.

  • Pending: Your brand registration is under review and your campaign registration is pending until it is confirmed.
  • In review: Your brand registration is accepted, and your campaign registration is under review. This can take up to three weeks to complete.
  • Approved: Your campaign registration is approved. Mews begins sending SMS messages from the next day.
  • Suspended: Your account or campaign registration is suspended due to an error. Mews then contacts your property to help resolve the error.
  • Failed: Your campaign registration is not approved. Mews then investigates and submits your registration again.

Note: There is a one-time registration fee for three registration attempts. This is non-refundable and Mews adds this fee to your monthly invoice once you submit your registration.
