The Tips report in the Mews POS web dashboard shows the tips and service charges your staff earn. You can use it to:
- See total tips, service charges, and tip pool contributions for any date range and outlet.
- Break tips down by payment type, for example, credit card, cash, and room charge.
- See what each user earns, contributes to the tip pool, and takes home, down to each transaction.
The Tips report is available to all properties that enable tipping for at least one outlet.
To view the report, in the Mews POS web dashboard, go to the main menu > Reports > Tips. The report opens on the Tips overview tab.
Note
- What you see in the Tips report depends on your permissions. With the Can manage team members permission, you see tips for all users. Without it, you see only your own tips and you can export only your own report.
In this article you can learn about:
- Setting the filters in the report
- Understanding the fields in the report
- Exporting the report
- Using the report
Setting the filters in the report
The filters apply to every tab of the report. To set them:
- Date range: Click the date range dropdown to select the period you want to view. The report counts each calendar day from midnight to midnight in your property's time zone.
- Outlets: Click the dropdown to view all outlets or a specific outlet.
- Click either tab to switch between the Tips overview and By user views. The filters stay the same when you switch.
Understanding the fields in the report
Tips overview tab
The Tips overview tab summarizes tips and service charges for the selected period and outlets. It displays the following:
- Total tips: The total tips guests leave in the selected period.
- Average tip rate: The average tip as a percentage of the bill.
- Service charge: The total service charge collected in the selected period.
- Total pool: The total amount your staff contribute to the tip pool.
- Payment type breakdown: Tips divided into Credit card, Cash, and Room charge.
- Top tip earners: Users ranked by total tips, with the total for each user.
Tips report by user tab
The Tips report by user tab shows one row per user for the selected period. Each row displays the following:
- User: The name of the staff member.
- Role: The staff member’s role at your property.
- Average tip: The user's tips as an average percentage of the bills they close in the selected period. For example, a user who collects USD 15 in tips on USD 100 of bills has an Average tip of 15%.
- Tips: The direct tips guests leave for the user.
- Service charge: The user's share of the service charge on the invoices they close, after Mews POS deducts the house share.
- Pool contribution: The amount deducted from the user's tips and added to the shared tip pool, based on the Pool contribution percentage of the outlet. It shows 0 when the outlet has no tip pool.
- Total payable: The total amount payable to the user.
User detail view
Click a row on the By user tab to open the detail view for that user. It lists every transaction where the user received a tip or a service charge share, with the following fields:
- Date and time: The time of the payment.
- Order reference: The order the tip belongs to.
- Payment method: Credit card, cash, or room charge.
- Tip amount: The tip the guest left on this payment.
- Service charge amount: The user's share of the service charge on this invoice.
Note: When you void or refund a payment with a tip, Mews POS keeps the original row and adds a new row with a negative amount. The two rows cancel each other out, so the net effect on the totals is zero. This keeps a complete audit trail of every tip.
Viewing your tips in the Mews POS Android app
Users can check their own tips for the current day in the Mews POS Android app without opening the web dashboard. The app shows the same data as the Tips report by user tab for today, so the amounts match.
To view your tips in the Mews POS Android app:
- In the Mews POS Android app, tap Menu ≡.
- Tap Tips.
- To filter by outlet, tap All outlets and tap an outlet. Tap All outlets again to clear the filter.
The Tips screen displays the following:
- Your tips today: Your take home for today.
- Tips: The card and cash tips the system attributes to you.
- Service charge: Your share of the service charge on the invoices you close, after Mews POS deducts the house share.
- Pool contribution: The amount the system deducts from your tips and adds to the shared tip pool. It shows 0 when the outlet has no tip pool.
- Take home: Your net amount for today.
- Tip history: Every tip and service charge entry for today, newest first. Each entry shows the time, the table number or if recorded manually, the outlet, the amount, and the type: Card tip, Cash tip, or Service charge.
Note:
- Every user sees only their own tips in the app, including managers. Managers use the Tips report in the web dashboard to see all users.
- The app shows today only and does not export. Use the web dashboard to view other dates or to export the report.
Exporting the report
You can export any of the three views with the filters you set. To export the report:
- In the Mews POS web dashboard, go to the main menu
> Reports > Tips.
- Set the date range, outlet, and the tab you want to export.
- In the top right corner, click Export.
- Click to select a format:
- CSV: Raw data for importing into other tools.
- Excel: A formatted spreadsheet with headers and column formatting.
- PDF: A print-ready document with the report title, date range, and data.
The file downloads to your device.
Note:
- CSV exports show amounts in minor units, such as cents. Divide by 100 to get the amount in your currency. Excel and PDF exports show amounts with decimals.
- Exports follow the same permissions as the report. Without the Can manage team members permission, you can export only your own data.
Using the report
Some common ways to use the Tips report:
- Preparing payroll: Set the date range to your pay period, open the Tips report by user tab, and export to Excel. The Total payable column gives you the amount owed to each user after pool contributions.
- Answering a staff question about tips: Open the Tips report by user tab, click the user's row, and check the detail view for the day in question. Negative rows show voided or refunded payments.
- Checking service charge income: Use the Tips overview tab for the total service charge collected.
- Reconciling totals that look wrong: Check the date range and time zone first, then the outlet filter, then look for negative rows from voids or refunds in the detail view.
