How to manage payment types and tipping in Mews POS

Payment Types in Mews POS is where you define the ways your customers can pay and how tips are collected. As an admin user, you use the Payment Types section of Customer Settings to add, edit, and deactivate payment methods, and to configure tipping rules for card payments and room charges. You do this when you set up a new payment method, change how an existing one behaves, or adjust your tipping rules, from the POS back office. This keeps your payment methods aligned with what your outlets accept and how tips are handled.

Note:
Payment Types is only visible to users with the Admin role. Non-admin users cannot access this section.

In this article, you can learn about:

  • Whether it opens the cash drawer
  • Whether it creates fiscal records
  • Whether tipping is enabled
  • Active/inactive status

  2. Click to select the payment type from the list. Available types are:

  3. Enter a Custom Name if required. Note: This is mandatory for Voucher and Custom types.
  4. Configure any additional options, including:
    • Open cash drawer: Enable the slider switch to automatically open the cash drawer when the specific payment type is used. Note: If you deactivate a payment type, this setting resets to off. It is not restored when you reactivate.
    • Generate fiscal records: Enable this slider switch to include transactions using this payment type in fiscal reporting. You need to contact Mews if you want to change this setting.
    • Activate tipping: Enable this slider switch to allow tips for this payment type. This is only available for Credit card and Room charge. Enabling this creates a tipping configuration on the Tipping tab.
  5. Click Save.

This adds a payment method. You can enable the Active slider switch to enable the payment method on all outlets.

Note: Payment types like Cash, Credit card, Wire transfer, Room charge, and Pre-billing can only be added once per account. Attempting to add a second instance returns an error.

How to edit a payment method

  1. Click Edit  on the payment type row.
  2. Update the settings in the side panel. The payment type code is read-only and cannot be changed.
  3. Click Save.

This edits a payment method.

How to delete a payment method

  1. Click Delete on the payment type row.
  2. Click Delete again to confirm.

This deletes a payment method.

Tipping tab

Use this tab to configure tipping rules for your account. Tipping settings apply to all outlets and are available for card payments and room charges only.

The Tipping tab only becomes active once you have enabled tipping on at least one payment type, such as, Credit card or Room charge. If no tipping-enabled payment types exist, the tab shows an empty state.

Tip modes

Select one of three tip modes to define how tip options are presented to guests:

  • Percentages: Offer three percentage-based tip options, such as, 10%, 15%, 20%. Each value must be between 0 and 100.
  • Fixed amounts: Offer three fixed-amount tip options, such as $2, $5, $10. Enter values as decimal amounts greater than 0.
  • Smart tipping: Combine a percentage and a fixed amount per tip option, plus a threshold amount. If the order total is above the threshold, the percentage applies, if below, the fixed amount applies.

How to configure tipping

  1. Go to the Tipping tab.
  2. Select your preferred Tip mode.
  3. Enter the values for each of the three tip options.
  4. Click Save.

Note: If you navigate away from the Tipping tab with unsaved changes, you are prompted to save or discard them. Leaving without saving loses your changes.

How to disable tipping

To disable tipping entirely, go to the Payment types tab and toggle Tipping off on all relevant payment types, such as, Credit card and Room charge. This deactivates the tipping configuration.

You can now configure the payment methods your outlets accept in Mews POS and set up how tipping is captured across your account.
