Note: When a customer pays using Apple Pay, Google Pay or any wallet payment methods, the system saves this payment on the guest profile but it is not reusable and tokenized.

How does the tokenized card work for  subsequent payments, considering 3DS and PSD2 regulations in the EEA?

Payments with a tokenized card follow these steps:

  1. The guest taps the card.
  2. Mews Terminal asks for a PIN if the payment is eligible for the 3DS. For example, a high-value payment. Note: Low-value payments generally do not need a PIN entry if the amount is below EUR 50. This amount depends on the issuer.
  3. The guest adds the PIN and the payment is successful.
  4. If the guest permits the property to use the stored card to pay for other expenses at the hotel:
  • The system marks subsequent transactions as MOTO (Mail Order/ Telephone Order), which are 3DS exempted. The guest does not need to verify the payment using an email flow.
  •  If the issue does not accept an exemption and they decline payment for need of authentication:
    • the guest then needs to go through the 3DS email flow, and
    • verify the payment for the property to charge the amount.

What do PCI compliance and E2EE mean for properties?

The Mews Terminal S2 encrypts card data when the customer presents the card to the device. The terminal uses end-to-end encryption to ensure Mews never sees unencrypted card data. According to PCI auditors E2EE is a robust solution that properties can use to reduce the risk and applicability of PCI DSS controls.
