Product rules allow you to automatically add or remove products to reservations that Mews Operations receives. For example, you could add free Wi-Fi access for all business travelers making reservations under a business rate. You can use product rules to add products to specific reservations based on selected criteria. However, you can not choose the day of consumption for products that you charge once, in this case, Mews always selects the last day of the stay as the consumption date.
You can use product rules to create product bundles. For example, when a guest books a Breakfast bundle, the system automatically replaces that bundle with the products that make it up. When a bundle is booked, the system removes the bundle product and adds the included products to the reservation. These products appear individually on the bill, allowing Mews to apply the correct VAT to each item.
Note: You are responsible for ensuring that the total gross price of the bundle matches the sum of the gross prices of the products you include. This also applies across any external systems or integrations, such as channel managers or discounting tools, where prices may be adjusted.
Mews Operations can identify incoming reservations through a product rule based on any of the following reservation attributes:
- Guest segment
- Rate
- Rate group
- Space category
- Space type
- Number of nights booked
- Reservation origin
- Product(s) on reservation
After identifying the reservations, you can use a product rule action to add or remove specific products from the reservation.
Note
- Only users with “Create and manage product rules” permissions can access this feature.
- You must ensure the gross price of the package equals the sum of the gross prices of all included products.
- If you adjust prices in external systems, such as, channel managers, ensure the product prices match.
- This feature is currently only available for properties in Germany.
In this article, you can learn the following steps:
Prerequisites
Before you create the package, ensure that you:
- Create all individual products that form part of the package
- Create the product that represents the packaged offer
- Create the product that represents the packaged offer
- Confirm that the total gross price of the individual products matches the gross price of the packaged product
Note: Ensure that the sum of the gross prices and the sum of the taxes of all package components match the gross price and tax of the packaged product to maintain accurate billing and tax reporting.
How to package products using a product rule
You package products by setting up a product rule that replaces one packaged product with multiple individual products when a reservation contains that product.
Step 1: Create the product rule
To create the product rule:
- In Mews Operations, go to the main menu
> Settings > Services.
- Click on a bookable service.
- Click Product rules.
- Click + on the top right of the screen.
- Priority: Enter the priority of product rules when more than one applies. The value zero assigns the highest priority followed by 1 a lower priority and so on.
For example, you have product rules with the following Rule action:
-
- Add “Cola“: Priority set to 0, results in the highest priority.
- Remove "Cola” and add “Juice”: Priority set to 1, a lower priority.
In this case, if you receive a reservation where both product rules are applicable, the higher priority product rule overrides any matching lower priority product rules and the system adds only “Cola” to the reservation.
- Click to select a Segment, Rate, Rate group, Space category, Space type, Origin, and/or Travel agency. For each, you need to also select a Condition from Equals or Not Equals.
Note:
-
- The product rule applies only to reservations that match your selected criteria.
- If you are creating a product bundle, select Product and choose the bundle product. The rule triggers whenever that product appears in a reservation.
- Segment: Apply the product rule to reservations in the selected segment.
- Rate: Apply the product rule to reservations using the selected rate. You can also apply product rules to your existing availability blocks by selecting their block rates. Note: The product rule applies only to reservations picked up after creating the rule for your block.
- Rate group: Apply the product rule to reservations using a rate from the selected rate group.
- Space category: Apply the product rule to reservations of an assigned space from the selected space category.
- Space type: Apply the product rule to reservations of the selected space type.
- Origin: Apply the product rule to reservations booked via the selected method.
- Travel agency: Apply the product rule to reservations from the selected travel agencies.
- Enter a value under Minimum count or Maximum count if you want to also restrict the bookings based on the number of nights booked. For example, enter “2” in the Minimum count to add the product to bookings of two nights or more.
- Click Create. This opens the Product rule screen.
Step 2: Set the trigger condition
- Click the Conditions dropdown to select Equals.
- Click the Product dropdown to select the packaged product from your product list.
This condition triggers the rule when a reservation contains the selected product, for example, If you create a product called Breakfast Package and select it, the rule triggers every time a reservation includes this product
Step 3: Create the product action
You must configure a product action that:
- Cancels the original packaged product, and
- Adds the individual products.
This ensures that only the individual components remain on the reservation, for example, if the packaged product is Breakfast Package, you cancel Breakfast Package and add Breakfast Food and Breakfast Drinks as separate products.
To create a product rule actions:
- On the Product rule screen, click the rule you create in step 2, then click + Rule action.
- Fill in the following details:
- Product: Click the dropdown to select the product you select in step 2.
- Action: Click to select Cancel from the drop-down.
Note:
- Cancel instructs Mews Operations to exclude the product from the reservation.
- The Cancel action does not work for products added manually.
- The system cancels only the products added automatically via product rules.
- The system selects Add under the Action field by default.
- You can add multiple product actions to a single Product rule, however, each action adds or removes one product only. You cannot add the same product more than once using additional product actions.
- Bundles can only include products, not allowances.
- Bundles cannot include other packages.
- The gross price of the bundle must equal the total gross price of the included products.
- The bundle itself does not display on the bill after the rule runs. Instead, the bill shows the included products.
- Click Create.
- On the Product rule screen, click + Rule action.
- Fill in the following details:
- Product: Click the drop-down to select an individual product for the package.
- Action: Click to select Add from the drop-down. Note: Add instructs Mews Operations to include that product in the reservation.
- Click Create.
- Repeat steps 4-6 for each individual product in the package.
- Review the condition and actions.
- Click Save the product rule.
This creates both a product rule and product rule action so that reservations meeting those selected criteria automatically include or exclude certain products.
