Mews calculates and displays your space availability in Mews Operations and across the distribution channels according to your existing space categories.
After you create a bookable service, you can then create the necessary space categories, for example, “Standard rooms”, “Deluxe rooms”, “Studios”, to organize your spaces by type, ensuring accurate availability, pricing, and occupancy data.
You can access the space categories section of your bookable service by typing "Space categories" in the Mews search bar.
Note:
- To create and delete space categories, employees need the Create and manage space categories permission.
- If you map your space categories, make sure to map also the new space categories you create to list them in the Mews Booking Engine.
To create a space category:
- In Mews Operations, go to the main menu
> Settings > Services.
- Click the bookable service you want to create a new space category for.
- Click Space categories.
- Click the
+button.
- Enter the space category details.
-
- Add translation: Click to select a language to add a translation for the Name, Short name, Description, and Order email template fields.
- Name: The space category name.
- Short name: A short name for places in Mews Operations where the text space is limited, such as in reports. Note: On the new reservation screen the limit for each name is 20 characters.
- Description: A short description of the space category to display in Mews Operations and in the Mews Booking Engine.
- Ordering: A number that defines the hierarchy of your space categories. This ordering number helps the system to determine the space upgrades or downgrades, depending on the order of their space category. For example, the system considers a space from a space category with an ordering of “1” an upgrade compared to a space from a space category with an ordering of “0”. Note: For two categories with the same ordering number, the system considers the space category with a larger Capacity superior.
- Space type: The type of space in this category, for example, Room, Dorm, Parking spot, Team, Desk area.
- Capacity: The number of guests that each space in this category can accommodate. This can be different from the number of beds.
-
- Extra capacity: The number of additional guests that each space in this category can accommodate. Use the Extra occupancy adjustment field in your rate settings to make sure that guests are charged more for a space when extra capacity is used. You can learn more about this here.
Note: When you use the space's extra capacity, the Space status report displays theicon.
- Housekeeping interval: The number of days before the housekeeping status of spaces in this category automatically changes to "Dirty". If you leave this field blank, Mews applies your default housekeeping interval.
- Accounting category: The accounting category for revenue from time spent in this category.
- Space classification: The space classification you want revenue systems to use.
- Reservation assignment strategy: The way you want Mews to assign reservations to this space category. Note: Mews Operations prioritizes the space category's strategy over the reservation assignment strategy you set up for your bookable service.
- Bottom up: Assign new reservations starting with the lowest floors and with the lowest space numbers. Once the system assigns all spaces from one floor, it assigns new reservations to the lowest space numbers from the floor above.
- Preferred space features: Assign reservations to spaces based on how well they match the guest's preferred space features.
- Random: Assign spaces randomly, ensuring all rooms receive the same number of bookings.
- Top down: Assign new reservations starting with the highest floors and with the highest space numbers. Once the system assigns all spaces from one floor, it assigns new reservations to the highest space numbers from the floor below.
- Space category key: The unique identification code to use with other mapping systems.
- Order email template: Any additional information you want to provide to your guests when they reserve spaces within this category.
- Extra capacity: The number of additional guests that each space in this category can accommodate. Use the Extra occupancy adjustment field in your rate settings to make sure that guests are charged more for a space when extra capacity is used. You can learn more about this here.
- Click Create.
The newly added space category appears in the Space categories screen.
Once you create it, you can add images of your space category to display them in the Mews Booking Engine. You can then create new spaces and assign them to your new space category.
